El pequeño Larousse ilustrado

Great for third or fourth year/semester Spanish learners
An illustrated dictionary, with the vocabulary in the definitions being more difficult than in learning dictionaries like the VOX, but including lots of difficult to find terms, such as person and place names, and even descriptions of historical events-almost like a mini-encyclopedia.

...

Mi diccionario monolingue favorito
Great dictionary, good encyclopedic section, covers all of Latin American Spanish

Amazing
My Spanish teacher had a 1989 edition, and I thought it an excellent resource, if dated. So when I discovered I could find it - in Spanish - on amazon.com, I was thrilled. I bought it way before it was published, and have not been disappointed. Full color, great maps and tons of illustrations make this a fabulous all-in-one resource - in Spanish. Only minor errors (they said Kitty Hawk was in South Carolina), otherwise they know what they're talking about and I find this a great book.

An excellent reference for grade-schoolers...
I bought this dictionary for my 8 year-old daughter. She took it to school with her (leaving her other dictionary here at home). She kept it in her desk all year long, and referred to it as needed. It hit the spot, and was an excellent choice. If you have a child in grade school, this is a perfect item for them, fitting well into backpack or desk.

Terrific dictionary for my 4th grader.
This dictionary is just perfect for the age group. It gives them what they need to know without losing them with too many details and definitions. It's making language arts so much easier. When was the last time you saw your nine-year-old son smile when he got a dictionary???

Dinosaurs (First Facts)
Published in Paperback by Kingfisher Books (October, 1995)
Authors: Michael J. Benton and Kingfisher Books

Inspiring
My boys...were immediately inspired by the fascinating
projects in this book! However, they are not able to make
the projects independently. I would highly recommend this
book for parents of kids who are willing to get their hands
dirty and for parent of kids who like multi-day projects.
We had a blast building a full model Stegasarous and T-rex,
but we spent many hours building them.

You will need to go to other resources for full details
about how/when/where the dinos lived. This is mostly a project
book and less of a reference book. But the projects are so
fun and interesting, it will make you want to learn more.

Kiki of Kingfisher Cove : a tale of a Nova Scotia cat
Published in Unknown Binding by Lancelot Press ()
Author: Barbara B. Shaw
Average review score:

A timeless children's story about a cat's adventure
I've had this book since I was 10 (or so) and I've re-read it many times since and still enjoy it at 27. A wonderfully descriptive story based in Nova Scotia. The author gives an honest portrayal of life by the sea. Cat lovers will will love the cat's eye view of story, and the author writes in such a way that you can relate to Kiki's reactions to his lobster boat adventure. Terrific

The Kingfisher A-Z Encyclopedia: Up-to-the-Minute Information
Published in Hardcover by Larousse Kingfisher Chambers (15 October, 2002)
Author: Ben Hoare
Average review score:

A Great First Encyclopedia
I bought this encyclopedia for my first grader and rising kindergartner. The scope of topics is very wide while the entries range from short to more extensive for what the publishers label "Special Features". This is a list of 37 "important topics" ranging from the continent of Africa and Art to Dinosaurs, Earth and the two World Wars. The illustrations are excellent and the use of bold type in the entries alerts you to separate entries for those words. I find this an outstanding jumping off point for my children to peruse and answer their questions or lead them to deeper questions. Most attractive to me in my comparison to other encyclopedias was the more tasteful and less explicit treatment of the Reproduction entry. We're not ready for that much information.

Kingfisher Blue: Treasures of an Ancient Chinese Art
Published in Hardcover by Ten Speed Press (March, 2002)
Author: Beverley Jackson
Average review score:

an awesome eyeful of iridescence
While Kingfishers today are celebrated around the world from Papua New Guinea, to Australia, Malaysia, England & the USA, their images appearing on paper money & stamps all around the Pacific Ocean, it has been the people of China who have penned poems to these halcyon-feathered creatures, & written songs in turquoise-tinted praise.

Stories, of course, abounded, & Beverley Jackson has woven one of them through the pages of her latest book, & re-enchants us with the visions that have mesmerized emperors, peasants, dowagers, actors, prostitutes, brides & foreigners alike.

KINGFISHER BLUE is a masterpiece, a labor of love unparalleled. If blue is your favorite color; if you have ever looked upon a thing of beauty colored by the feathers of these fabled birds - then you will simply have to put it on your Wish List or purchase your very own copy.

Beverley Jackson always takes you away into the reaches of time, remember her SPLENDID SLIPPERS? She wafts us away into the lives of another people, into magical stories where you learn about all sorts of strange & wondrous things, & with superb photography, gifts you indelible images.

KINGFISHER BLUE deserves a crownful of stars!

The Kingfisher Book of Fairy Tales
Published in Hardcover by Larousse Kingfisher Chambers (October, 2000)
Author: Vivian French
Average review score:

A beautiful book, in language and in illustration
This is a wonderful collection of fairy tales. I bought this particular collection because Peter Malone's illustrations are stunning--but as I was reading "Cinderella" to my five year old son,I found myself admiring the detailed imagery of the writing as well. Vivian French's storytelling is exquisite and compelling, even in tales that we've heard many times. My son's only frame of reference for "Beauty and the Beast" was the Disney version; after we read the Kingfisher version he told me that he wanted to read all the Beauty and Beast stories he could find because this story was so much better. I'm going to find more of the author and illustrator's work, and give this book as a gift. A true treasure!
